MATCH BOX LABELS

2022-2024, Tokyo

Using the matchstick as a symbol of the fleeting beauty of everyday moments—echoing the aesthetics of mono no aware and wabi-sabi— I began researching historical matchbox label designs. Drawing particular inspiration from early Showa-era graphics, I started creating my own visual interpretations.

Over the years, this research evolved into a series of illustrations and matchbox label designs, culminating in my 2023 exhibition, The Phire, held in Sangenjaya, Tokyo. The exhibition showcased 30 original matchbox label designs.

/////Kkultur,Black Label Series

I worked on a series of illustrations inspired by real characters from films as well as people from everyday life. The focus was on capturing their presence and personality in a simple but clear way, without adding unnecessary details. Rather than using a wide range of colors, I chose to keep the palette limited and controlled. This helped create a consistent visual language across the series.

SOUP Rinpyo Seizojyo(スープ燐票製造所)is a series of matchbox label designs inspired by the colorful and bold graphics of Showa-era matchbox labels from Japan. The project takes reference from the strong typography, simple compositions, and striking color contrasts that were common in that period.

ARTWORKS

(EXHIBITION) "Monotone", 2024, Istanbul

Monotone marked a deeper exploration into darker themes, presented through more detailed and atmospheric works. Continuing my approach of intentional incompleteness, each piece invites the viewer to engage with ambiguity and form their own interpretations. The recurring motif of characters holding matchsticks serves as a quiet self-portrait—a symbol of potential, ignition, and inner tension.
